This program is guided towards a strict acclimatization process in order to get
adjusted to high altitudes that assure a successful climb to the summit of the
Cotopaxi (5.890/19.400 ft.)
General Level: Hard to extra hard.
- Day 01:
Quito-Yanahurco gate by car. Start hiking at 3.800 meters for first
acclimatization along the canyon of Tamboyacu river about three hours on a light
dirt road hike of approximately 14 km. Box lunch on the way. Arrival to hacienda
at 3.550 meters for accommodations. Dinner and overnight in tents or dorms with
shared facilities and hot showers.
- Day 02:
After breakfast, full day hike to Sebretana Waterfall (3.800 meters). Moorland
with some wild life such as deer, birds and occasionally condors
This hike takes from 5 to 6 hours round trip. Box lunch along the way. Afternoon return to hacienda house. Dinner and overnight.
Same accommodations.
- Day 03:
After breakfast, a full day hike to Jatuncocha lake that takes approximately 8
hours round trip, and reaching 4.000 meters. Box lunch along the way. Afternoon
return to hacienda house. Dinner and overnight. Same accommodations.
- Day 04:
After breakfast pack your equipment to go to Cotopaxi's José Rivas Refuge at
4.800 meters. Passengers are driven up to 4.550 m. Then take a 1 hour hike to
the refuge. Here we meet our high mountain licensed guide. Box lunch along the
way. Afternoon short practice at the lower glaciers. Dinner and overnight at the
refuge.
- Day 05:
After breakfast and at 02:00 start the departure for summit to be reached around
07:30 or 08:00. Descent to refuge arriving by noon. Box lunch along the way.
Hike down to parking lot that will take around 1/2 hour and then drive two hours
back to Quito.
